As long as it's in operation, your home's central HVAC system is circulating air throughout your house. As it does, small particulates like dust, dander, pollen and other airborne pollutants are picked up and carried through the ductwork. Without a filter, these could be carried into the HVAC system, building up on fan blades and even being pulled into the furnace, causing a fire hazard. The filter protects the HVAC system, and changing the furnace filter every month does too.
